The UoC Postdoc Grant is part of the ‚UoC Graduate and Young Researcher Program‘ (GYRP) of the University of Cologne and is awarded to outstanding PhD students and young scientist in order to support their research projects.

The research focus of David Vilchez and his group is on molecular mechanisms of Morbus Huntington. They bring together findings from stem cell research on patients suffering from Huntington’s disease with research on C. elegans. The central question is if modified mechanisms for controlling protein quality could help reducing toxic accumulation of proteins which can be found in Huntington’s disease.

The grant will allow Matteo Bergami and his research group to pursue their research on brain injury, in particular to dissect the mechanisms that regulate the energy metabolism of brain cells following trauma, stroke and neuroinflammation. They try to better understand the potential of brain cells for reacting to such injurious insults and to identify potential targets that allow for protecting cells and promote tissue repair.
